Bitcoin at its worst annual start since the dawn of crypto

Bitcoin fell for the fifth time in six days, setting it up for its worst start to the year since the early days of the digital alternative to money.

The original cryptocurrency fell 3.7% to $ 40,766 in New York trading, bringing its loss this year to around 12%. The drop is the largest for a start to the year since at least 2012. The ether edged down slightly, while the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index fell for a fourth day.

“Cryptocurrencies are expected to remain under pressure as the Fed cuts its cash injections,” said Jay Hatfield, managing director of Infrastructure Capital Advisors. “Bitcoin could end 2022 below $ 20,000.”

Bitcoin was created in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis by an anonymous individual or group called Satoshi Nakamoto. It started trading in 2009 and pricing information for the early days is limited.

Mike McGlone of Bloomberg Intelligence said that $ 40,000 is an important level of technical support for the digital token. Cryptocurrencies are a good barometer of the current reduction in risk appetite. But he predicts that Bitcoin will eventually take hold as the world becomes increasingly digital and the coin becomes the gold standard.

The COVID-19 pandemic has helped Bitcoin further break into the mainstream as institutions and retail investors became involved in the crypto market and its ancillary projects. Now that the Federal Reserve has become more hawkish, riskier assets such as stocks and digital assets have suffered.

“The Fed’s policy tightening affects not only interest rates, but also the equity risk premium, as the Fed pulls funds out of the capital markets. Riskier investments such as unprofitable tech, memes stocks, and cryptocurrency are disproportionately affected compared to the rest of the market, as these investments are roughly twice as volatile as the overall market and therefore have double the amount of. the risk premium than the stock average, ”Hatfield said.

Noelle Acheson, head of market analysis at Genesis Global Trading, said the Bitcoin crisis appears to be driven more by the coin’s short-term traders than by long-term holders.
