Crypto.com, name of former Staples Center arena, loses $30 million in hack – Deadline

It hasn’t been a good year for the Los Angeles Lakers or the Los Angeles Clippers on their home turf. Now Crypto.com, which took over the naming rights of the old Staples Center, has suffered a bigger blow than losing a basketball game. They were hacked for $30 million in bitcoins and ether.

Crypto.com said Thursday it had a breach in its security systems earlier in the week. He estimates massive losses on the two major cryptocurrencies and some other digital funds.

The company is known for its viral ad featuring Matt Damon, but it really came into its own when it shelled out $700 million to rename the Staples Center in Los Angeles as the Crypto.com Arena.

The missing funds were withdrawn from 483 client accounts, according to a statement posted by the Singapore-based crypto exchange on its corporate blog on Thursday.

“Unauthorized withdrawals totaled 4,836.26 ETH, 443.93 BTC, and approximately $66,200 in other currencies,” the company said in the post. All customers were “fully reimbursed” for any funds lost as a result of the hack, Crypto.com said.

The break-in happened on Monday, the blog reported.

CoinDesk, a newsletter that covers the blockchain and crypto industries, reported that around 4,600 ether was “currently laundered through Tornado Cash – an Etherium mixer.”

Kris Marszalek, the CEO of Crypto.com, admitted in an interview that around 400 customer accounts were hacked.

“Given the scale of the business, these numbers are not particularly large and client funds were not at risk,” the CEO told Bloomberg.

However, some disgruntled customers claimed on social media that they were not yet reimbursed and wondered aloud how the two-factor authentication required by the site had been circumvented.

Shares of Crypto.com fell more than 6% on hack news, closing Thursday at 46 cents per share.
