So you want a first job in crypto? Good luck. Although the structure of the digital asset market is evolving and transforming to meet the needs of institutional investors, many companies in the sector are still quite young. Very few of them organize real graduate programs. However, many are in the process of implementing them.
A recent report by Coalition Greenwich highlights the fact that crypto covers everything from trading platforms to prime brokerage, market making, monitoring, analysis, custody and settlement.
We have included the key players identified by the report in the list below. If you are interested in a first step into crypto, it is worth contacting them individually. There are household names like the Nasdaq, as well as banks like BNY Mellon, Northern Trust, Standard Chartered and State Street; at the moment, banks offer the most obvious entry route through their traditional graduate programs.
Part of the problem is that pure crypto companies are growing fast, but they employ a fraction of the people who fund traditionally, and they don’t need dozens of graduates. Therefore, they generally do not offer graduate programs in the traditional sense. But if you browse their websites, some, like Coinbase, offer graduate positions in programming or, in the case of Binance M&A internships. Their needs are changing. A Kraken spokesperson told eFinancialCareers that the crypto exchange is expanding opportunities at Kraken for interns and recent graduates.
Generally speaking, however, the cryptocurrency ecosystem and decentralized finance in particular are areas of growth. This means that the crypto industry is looking for a growing number of skilled workers in various niches including blockchain programming, software design as well as marketing and growth experts. Then there are venture capital firms that specialize in crypto investments and hire investment analysts.
Many roles in crypto companies require people with several years of professional experience, creating a sort of Catch 22 as a fresh graduate, how do you get into this industry without already having a job there?
It can be intimidating, but there is a way to get into it. Zeth Couceiro, founder of Plexus, a leading crypto recruitment firm, says the best advice for a grad looking to find a job in crypto is to brush up on Solidity and then start open-source coding on GitHub. If you can get code published, then you’re in the ecosystem. For software engineers, resources for potential graduates include Consensys Bootcamp, Chainslot, UseWeb3, Buildspace, and Web3 University.
Solidity is the programming language for developing smart contracts that run on Ethereum, and salaries for solidity engineers have increased 63% to $180,000 in 2020, according to Plexus.
As the crypto industry matures, companies are also looking to hire more people with a background in traditional finance. Couceiro says: Our clients are starting to realize that you can hire talent with standard financial experience instead, in an effort to avoid the ultra-high costs that come with a candidate with DeFi experience. People working in the DeFi space should have an understanding of lending, math, and traditional finance; so pulling people out of the financial space is a great way to meet those demands without breaking the bank.
The crypto industry is self selected and not for the faint hearted. When I started in crypto, it felt more like a religion than an industry. The level of intellectual debate and argumentation is intense, Couceiro adds.
Jesse Powell, founder and CEO of Kraken, the crypto exchange echoes this in a video interview: For most people at Kraken, crypto is a way of life. Once they learn about crypto, they become totally immersed in it, and coming to work for Kraken is a way to connect their personal interests with their professional lives.
As for the job itself, no two days are the same for Krakenites because it’s a hyper-growth business. Employees should have a flexible mindset and adapt to changing business needs. You will see me loading the dishwasher at the office. I’m not above doing any job, Powell said.
