In October 2020, the Nigerian government closed the feminist coalition’s bank account. The coalition was responsible for assisting in the treatment and release of injured and arrested EndSARS protesters. Immediately after discovering this had happened, the coalition switched to only accepting bitcoin, as it is free and decentralized.
The movement had called for an end to the constant brutality and illegal detention of young people and for a total reform of the country’s institutions. The feminist coalition is itself decentralized, without a leader, and bitcoin has become the only way to offer financial support to the staunch protesters.
This historic move has become a crowning achievement for bitcoin and the nation’s youth. Months after the protest, the government tried to use every means possible to discourage the use of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, but that only brought more attention.
Emeka, a 25-year-old software engineer at a tech company in Arizona, always encountered difficulties whenever he wanted to send money to his family in Enugu, Nigeria. When Emeka realized he could instantly send bitcoin to his family without them having to wait days or weeks to get it from the bank, he was overjoyed. Cross-border remittances and payments are a multi-billion dollar industry – despite this, many traditional financial institutes struggle to make it simple and accessible – bitcoin solves this problem.
Bitcoin solves this problem
In 2020, Nigerian importers chose to use bitcoin as payment for their goods when they noticed that their counterparts in countries like China (exporters) shared the same sentiments with them. Nigerian freelancers and entrepreneurs now see bitcoin as a way to circumvent barriers related to global trade issues, such as banking transaction limits and border payment restrictions.
You will never read these types of stories about the emancipation of bitcoin in the mainstream media. The mainstream media still acts awkwardly towards innovations and is controlled by the same people who fear bitcoin will take away their jobs as middlemen and centralized authorities.
The only thing the mainstream media tells their audience is the myth that bitcoin is fake money, bitcoin is a currency used by scammers, bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme. They tell all these misinformed stories because maybe that’s what their best followers want to hear or, more likely, that’s what those who own the media want them to feed the public, but that’s not not what bitcoin is.
The ideology of bitcoin is not just about something one gains or loses when its USD price rises or falls in the digital trading market. It’s not just about privacy. It’s not just about memes. More than anything, it’s a question of freedom.
There have been many revolutions in human history, but none has had a more tremendous effect than this one. It is not just a revolution by words or by physical protests or struggles. It is a social revolution fueled by mathematics, by codes and by the people. It is a struggle for the power of capital and financial freedom. A revolution in mentalities.
Governments and centralized institutions around the world are already used to having ab initio control. They are used to controlling every aspect of people’s lives: how they dress, what they eat, what they say and don’t say, how they love, how they learn and so many other stuff. In fact, there is so much control everywhere, that it becomes conventional. It has become the norm.
This ideology of absolute control has spread to all other institutions of society, from the family to religion to schools and universities. Freedom in each of these groups is now seen as a form of disease, madness and immorality.
When bitcoin debuted, it was treated with the same distaste as expected, so it was only used in secret. Until a few years later, when it became mainstream, when people started to question their ideology of money, fiat money issues, and their quest for freedom.
Since then, bitcoin has shattered all the tantrums thrown at it.
My message to those who are still waiting to hear that people have lost and bitcoin has totally fallen is that they should wake up from their dilemma and give bitcoin a try. They should open their hearts to changes because bitcoin has come to stay.
Bitcoin is rewriting the rules of finance and the rules of economics.
Neo-Luddites think bitcoin is just an invented virtual currency that any super coder can create. But bitcoin is not just a currency, bitcoin is an institution in its own right; bitcoin is an ideology, a truth movement, a movement that takes people’s economic hardship into consideration. Bitcoin is the renaissance of decentralization.
Bitcoin is the new normal, the new economy, the new world order.
