Crypto carnage: Bitcoin collapse wipes out $1 billion in the blink of an eye

[ad_1]

In the blink of an eye, over a trillion dollars of value in the crypto market evaporated.

The jarring downturn that has characterized digital assets in recent weeks continued to play out this week and Saturday, with Bitcoin at one point losing more than 15% during this period. The coin, which is the largest digital token, has fallen more than 50% from a recent peak, and many other cryptocurrencies have lost as much, if not more.

Superlatives of the carnage were easy to come by: Friday’s drop resulted in the liquidation of over $1.1 billion in crypto futures positions and, overall, over $1 trillion in value market have been destroyed since the last peak. In other words, the collapse pours salt on an already deep wound.

“All in all, digital currency markets have been tested this month,” said Jonathan Padilla, co-founder of Snickerdoodle Labs, a blockchain company focused on data privacy. “There is definitely pain there.”

Even longtime bulls are starting to wonder aloud when the beatings might end. Renowned crypto investor Mike Novogratz said on Twitter that “this will be a year where people realize that being an investor is hard work.”

But, crypto fans have an endless source of optimism and many are convinced that with Bitcoin already spending two-thirds of the year in the red, better times may soon be upon us.

At some point, the sellers will be exhausted and the market may see a capitulation soon, said Matt Maley, chief market strategist for Miller Tabak + Co.

“When that happens, institutions will come back significantly,” he said. “Once the asset class gets more washed out, they’ll have a lot more confidence to come back and buy them. They know crypto isn’t going away, so they’ll have to get back to it soon.

The news cycle has been relentless. Regulators in Russia, the UK, Singapore and Spain have all announced interventions that could undermine crypto firms looking to expand in those regions, while US monetary policy tightening has left traders looking ahead. several interest rate hikes this year.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration is preparing to release an initial government-wide strategy for digital assets as early as next month and task federal agencies with assessing the risks and opportunities they present, according to people familiar with the matter.

This weighed on Bitcoin enough to send it below $34,000 on Saturday.

Bitcoin’s decline since its peak in November has wiped out around $600 billion and over $1 trillion has been lost in the overall crypto market. While there were much larger percentage pullbacks for Bitcoin and the overall market, this is the second-largest dollar drop ever for both, according to a Friday note from Bespoke Investment Group. The biggest ever was last summer, when a decline that peaked in late July wiped out $646 billion for Bitcoin.
