At Russian national, Alexander Vinnik accused of running a multibillion-dollar cryptocurrency exchange that allegedly profited from various hacking and extortion schemes has been extradited from Greece and is on his way to the US according to the suspect’s lawyer. Vinnik who is in his early 40s, is accused of operating a #cryptocurrency exchange known as BTC-e that allegedly did business with #ransomware gangs, drug dealers and identity thieves, according to the US Department of Justice. Vinnik’s extradition is a significant win for US law enforcement officials, who had been in a high-stakes extradition fight with Russia to gain custody of Vinnik. BTC-e, which shut down in 2017, received more than $4 billion worth of bitcoin while it was operating, according to the Justice Department. The Treasury Department in 2017 assessed a $110 million civil money penalty against the cryptocurrency exchange “for willfully violating US anti-money laundering laws” and a $12 million fee against Vinnik. Blockchain Intelligence Group, a global provider of cryptocurrency and blockchain analytics serving the global law enforcement and financial investigations community will continue to monitor developments and track and trace suspect digital assets. “I think personal opinions can change over time, as you learn more and more about use cases of crypto,” says Coins.ph CEO Wei Z. re: Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor’s “not interested in crypto” remark. For regulators, they probably see this as a tool to facilitate maybe illicit finance. But there are enough tools and so many checks and controls. With #OFAC listing #TornadoCash #SmartContract #Ethereum addresses and #USDC addresses on the #SDN list, we confront foundational questions about regulation of #crypto: How does #law regulate #code that is not operated by a #legal person or entity? Should smart contracts be considered legal people? Who has standing to argue against the designation? How can users protect themselves from receiving transactions from a sanctioned address? What stops someone else from deploying the same smart contracts on a new address that isn’t listed on the OFAC list? Some of these questions have been around for years; I covered the “spray of death” scenario where a sanctioned address sends payments to unwitting addresses in this piece from 2018 written with Joseph Ciccolo, CAMS, AMLCA published by CoinDesk https://lnkd.in/gnniXz2u If you have concerns about how these updates to the OFAC SDN list impact your business’ #compliance program, please consult with qualified counsel. #cryptocurrency #blockchain

“Smartness? Have a #blockchain smart contract! A #smartcontract is a direct #digital contract between two parties that cements any transaction and securely files it. It records it without the implications or interference of a third party that could potentially negatively interrupt the contract flow or agreement. Blockchain smart contracts are highly beneficial to the protection and security of various transactions. As soon as you make any investment, you receive an automatic digital receipt and contract that secures your investment without the risk of hacker intervention or interference causing the disclosure of private information. Blockchain smart contracts offer a variety of benefits and are something you should invest in. To know more about Blockchain smart contracts, head to our blog https://lnkd.in/gYFuV6hN

As the layer-1blockchain Ethereum continues to focus on a road map toward greater decentralization, its co-founder, Vitalik Buterin , thinks that moment might come sooner than expected. I think even today, were at the point where the Ethereum project can function completely without me, Buterin said. And I think its only going to go more and more that way. https://lnkd.in/ecFNqAJD

Is an active page, of an OFAC sanctioned entity, on a social media website constitute an OFAC violation? For the past six-months, I and Blockchain Intelligence Group have been posting, here on LinkedIn about Tornado Cash and the threat this #cryptocurrency mixer is to #nationalsecurity. Today, US Department of the Treasury OFAC #sanctioned Tornado Cash, which has laundered over $7bn in cryptocurrency, much of it related to the over $455 million stolen by the Lazarus Group, a Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) state-sponsored hacking group that was sanctioned by the US in 2019. Tornado Cash is adecentralized, non-custodial privacy solutionbuilt on#Ethereum. It improves transaction privacy by breaking the on-chain link between recipient and destination addresses. Tornado Cash uses a smart contract that accepts ETH and ERC-20 deposits. These deposits can be drawn by any on-chain address. Whenever an asset is withdrawn by the new address, there is no way to link the withdrawal to the deposit, ensuring asset privacy. To read one of my earlier posts about Tornado Cash and its Co-Founder Roman Semenov check out https://lnkd.in/eNuNkjVK The Blockchain Intelligence Group #QLUE graph below shows a random sample of transactions involving Tornado Cash transactions that came in contact with a US based centralized virtual currency exchange. ZK-rollups have long been regarded as the endgame of Ethereum scaling, but even most full-time Ethereum developers find the future roadmap of zk-rollups opaque and confusing.
