The Argentinian government has appointed a National Blockchain Committee to establish guidelines for a state-level blockchain adoption strategy. In a document, Argentina remarks on the importance of this technology for the future and presents several use cases that would benefit from the introduction of blockchain for the digital transformation of the country.

More and more countries are now looking at how implementing blockchain technology can improve some of their public functions. Argentina recently released its national blockchain guidelines.

The document, presented on December 7, also creates a national blockchain committee, which will have the responsibility “to act as an interlocutor in the local blockchain ecosystem by promoting the interoperability of blockchain technologies and good governance. “.

The committee will be formed by the Secretariat for Public Innovation and other state organizations that will develop public policy and blockchain-based technology solutions. However, these other organizations that are called upon to be part of the committee are not detailed in the issued framework.

The framework released by the government outlines several uses that blockchain technology could have to help state-exclusive functions. The first area in which it is profiled to have uses is auditing, given the significant size and scope of some government structures. Blockchain is proposed as an element that will perform two functions in this regard: helping citizens see how the state invests public funds and centralizing all public processes using a single structure.

The second area concerns the identification of citizens. The Argentine state considers that the blockchain could be useful to facilitate identification processes by avoiding the falsification of identity documents and other documents issued by the authorities. Organizing a system around the blockchain would give third parties easy ways to confirm the validity of these documents.

In this regard, there are already initiatives using blockchain for this purpose. The city of Buenos Aires is currently implementing a system called Tangoid and expects it to be operational in January as part of a digitization push. The city will also run Ethereum nodes on an experimental basis to examine the inner workings of the cryptocurrency, to better understand it for regulatory purposes.
