TOR Network DDOS Attacks Lead to I2P Solution for Bitcoin Privacy Applications

Bitcoin privacy apps and Lightning Nodes have been plagued with DDOS issues for most of this year as TOR, the network used by many of these apps, came under attack. TOR, short for The Onion Router, is an encrypted overlay on the internet made up of thousands of relays that ensure network traffic is untraceable. On the TOR network, IP addresses are untraceable like a VPN.

Throughout 2022, the TOR network suffered continuous DDOS attacks, causing the network to operate well below satisfactory speeds. Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks are persistent attacks on a network from a decentralized cluster of computers pinging a network at or near capacity. The volume of traffic causes the network to slow down due to artificially created congestion.

TOR has been the subject of DDOS attacks for years and is an ongoing problem for the network.

The performance degradation caused on the TOR network by said DDOS attacks has impacted applications that leverage the TOR network, including Bitcoin wallets such as Mercury Wallet.

By making MercuryWallet independent of the application protocol, users can switch to I2P if TOR fails or is unavailable. This allows them to continue using the wallet and accessing their funds, even in the face of a DDOS attack on TOR.
