Sam Bankman-Fried had a dizzying fall from the top of the heap in the cryptocurrency world to a hefty prison sentence on a slew of fraud charges.
The 30-year-old founder of crypto exchange FTX, formerly associated with celebrities and rubbed shoulders with politicians as he tried to legitimize cryptocurrency as more than just a sleazy get-rich scheme rapidly.
However, his business, valued at $32 billion earlier this year, suddenly imploded in November after it filed for bankruptcy, inviting scrutiny from regulators, prosecutors and furious customers.
For the authorities, it was a rotten house of cards of a billion dollars which had collapsed.
Bankman-Fried, who is Jewish, is a vegan who sleeps four hours a night and typically wears a hoodie and dark t-shirt. He said he maintains a spartan lifestyle and has donated millions of dollars to causes including animal welfare, reducing global warming and fighting neglected tropical diseases.

His personal fortune once stood at nearly $25 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
Prestigious partnerships
The son of Stanford Law School professors and an elite graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Bankman-Fried worked as a broker on Wall Street before turning to cryptocurrencies in 2017.
He created a cryptocurrency investment fund, Alameda Research, moved to Hong Kong and then launched FTX.
Bankman-Fried, known on social media as SBF, was a strong advocate for smoother access to the crypto market for the general public, especially in the United States.
FTX’s success has allowed the platform to forge prestigious partnerships, including with recently retired American football legend Tom Brady and his ex-wife, Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen.
Bankman-Fried moved the company to the Bahamas, where taxes are almost non-existent, saying the Caribbean nation is one of the few countries with a comprehensive cryptocurrency licensing regime.
As his star rose, Fortune magazine wondered if he would be the next Warren Buffet.
However, things quickly turned sour.

fall out of favor
FTX’s implosion was swift following a Nov. 2 report on cryptocurrency news site CoinDesk about ties between FTX and Alameda.
The report revealed that Alameda’s balance sheet was heavily based on the FTT currency – a token created by FTX and with no independent value.
The price of FTT plunged in early November, rattling both Alameda and FTX, where Alameda held large trading positions.
Reeling from customer withdrawals and short of some $8 billion, FTX and about 100 related entities filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 11.
Among the revelations, investigators found that FTX backed Alameda with billions of dollars in client funds that are now likely lost forever.
Questions also remain about whether Bankman-Fried engaged in market manipulation or illegally provided inside information to Alameda.
Despite questions hanging over his company’s operations, Bankman-Fried defied legal advice and continued to appear on talk shows and conferences, offering his version of his company’s sudden failure, usually via video link. from the Bahamas.
Then came his arrest in the idyllic archipelago on Monday, at the request of the United States, and charges of money laundering, wire fraud and violation of campaign finance laws.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says the former crypto prodigy was “responsible for fraudulently collecting billions of dollars from investors in FTX and misappropriating funds belonging to FTX trading clients. “.
Bankman-Fried has acknowledged weak controls and corporate errors, but denies any wrongdoing.
“I never tried to defraud anyone,” Bankman-Fried said at a New York Times conference on Nov. 30. Again.”
Instead of bolstering investor confidence in the cryptocurrency, the Bankman-Fried fall caused major cryptocurrencies to plunge, only raising more doubts about the young and turbulent sector.
Israeli politics told directly
I joined The Times of Israel after many years covering US and Israeli politics for Hebrew language news outlets.
I believe responsible coverage of Israeli politicians means presenting a 360-degree view of their words and deeds, not only conveying what is happening, but also what it means in the broader context of Israeli society and of the region.
It’s hard to do because you can rarely take politicians at face value, you have to go the extra mile to present full context and try to overcome your own biases.
I am proud of our work which tells the story of Israeli politics in a direct and comprehensive way. I believe that Israel is stronger and more democratic when professional journalists do this difficult job well.
Your support for our work by joining the Times of Israel community allows us to continue to do so.
Thank you, Tal Schneider, Political Correspondent
