FTX ‘fraudster’ Sam Bankman-Fried asks for second bond

Accused crypto fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried made another bail offer on Thursday in hopes of getting out of a maggot-infested Bahamian confinement.

The request was filed after a magistrate in the Caribbean country ordered Bankman-Fried’s deportation pending his possible extradition to the United States, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Bankman-Fried was arrested Monday night in the Bahamas and charged in the Southern District of New York in an eight-count federal indictment, including fraud, money laundering, conspiracy and violations of campaign finance.

He faces a maximum of 115 years in prison if convicted.

It’s unclear what argument Bankman-Fried made in his new bail request, but a local report said he would be heard on Jan. 17.

A lawyer for Bankman-Fried did not immediately return the request for comment.

Bankman-Fried has signaled that he intends to fight extradition to the United States, where he will have to apply for bail with federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, meanwhile, has announced plans to indict Bankman-Fried’s accomplices for their role in one of the biggest financial frauds in U.S. history.
