What the FTX Collapse Means for Crypto Exchanges

The fall of FTX marks one of the most serious issues for crypto to date, with questions now being asked about the health of other industry giants.

The crypto industry has been rocked by the collapse of FTX. Big-name investors from Sequoia Capital to SoftBank have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the company, making bets that are worth nothing.

Countless individual traders also suffered huge losses. Regulators are investigating allegations that client funds were misappropriated by FTX and its trading subsidiary Alameda Research.

This marks one of the most serious issues for crypto to date, with questions being raised about the health of other industry giants such as Binance and Crypto.com.

Contagion from the debacle is already underway, with crypto lender BlockFi now seeking bankruptcy protection after revealing lending exposure to FTX and Alameda.

“I don’t think all the dominoes have fallen from the contagion,” says Marieke Flament, CEO of the Near Foundation, which took on the investment from FTX. “The impact this will have is that many projects will actually not have the funds, and therefore the resources, to continue and grow.”

Investors are withdrawing their coins from exchanges to avoid getting caught up in the fallout. Total bitcoin balances on exchanges have fallen from a peak of 3.1 million in 2020 to around 2.2 million at the end of 2022.

“Nothing is too big to fail,” says Ian Rogers, Chief Experience Officer at crypto security firm Ledger.
