blockchain
For a better understanding of these terms, start well by defining blockchain. Blockchain is a technologically advanced way of storing different transactions so that they are almost impossible to hack, modify or delete. This shows that it can be thought of as a digital record of information available across the entire network of systems.
It’s like a chain with many blocks. Each block contains a plethora of transactions that can be viewed by all parties involved. When someone makes a new transaction, it is automatically added to the ledger. Although it is currently the most widely used for trading and distributing cryptocurrencies, its applications are broader.
Some of the properties of this technology include:
Programmable – Since blockchain involves the use of smart contracts, it can be programmed to work in a particular way.
Distributed – Once a transaction has been made, all network participants will receive a copy of the transaction history. This distribution guarantees the greatest transparency.
Anonymous Even though people can know the number of participants in the network, their true identity is hidden. Identities can be either pseudonymous or anonymous identities
Secure Each transaction is encrypted; therefore, it cannot be modified or deleted by any participant. If a hacker wants to tamper with the system, he has to modify all the blocks. Therefore, optimal security is guaranteed.
Immutable No one has the power to undo or modify any transaction initiated on blockchain technology. If a modification is made, each participant will be able to consult it.
Timestamp Another notable property of the blockchain is its timestamp. This means that participants can see the date and time of each transaction.
Unanimity Each participant in a network agrees on the validity of each transaction. Nothing can be done or changed without the agreement of all participants.
Cryptocurrency
Cryptocurrency is a form of digital currency made with cryptographic techniques and can be used for different transactions. Although its applications are similar to those of fiat currency, it does not require traditional financial institutions such as banks. Using a peer-to-peer method, anyone can transfer money, regardless of location.
One of the unique characteristics of digital currency is that it does not require physical money. So, you don’t have to carry anything before you transact in the real world. It’s all done digitally through a digital wallet that stores your crypto assets.
Many cryptocurrencies are available today. The most popular include Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL) and Dogecoin (DOGE). Although these virtual currencies can be used by several people, their applications are currently limited. Indeed, many organizations and individuals still do not accept them for many transactions.
Moreover, cryptocurrencies have no specific intrinsic value. You cannot use it to redeem other products. Nevertheless, you can convert or exchange your crypto into fiat currency. For example, you can trade BTC USD without any problems.
It should be noted that cryptocurrency is based on blockchain technology. Thus, transactions involving digital currencies benefit from all the properties of this exceptional technology.
Bitcoin
Finally, let’s talk about bitcoin. Simply put, bitcoin is just one of the different types of cryptocurrencies available on different exchanges today. However, it is the first and most popular digital coin. To use this virtual currency, you do not need the help of a bank or other conventional financial institutions.
Historically, it was created and made public by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008. Transactions involving bitcoins are available on a public ledger. This means that everyone can access transactions whenever and wherever they want.
At first, each bitcoin was only worth around $1. Its value has changed a lot due to the volatile nature of cryptocurrencies. However, it rose to around $68,900 by the end of 2021. Over the following months, the value fell below $20,000.
Despite its fluctuating price, bitcoin remains the most valuable digital coin. Currently, we have over 19 million bitcoins available for different transactions.
With the above information, you now have a good understanding of what blockchain, cryptocurrency, and bitcoin mean.
