El Salvador introduces a ten-week program to teach students about bitcoin. The country is pushing for mass adoption of Bitcoin despite its declining BTC holdings.

The government of El Salvador continues to champion the mass adoption of Bitcoin. The Central American country is teaching students how to use Bitcoin in a new initiative it intends to help replicate around the world.

A viral clip shared on Twitter shows educators explaining to students practical steps for receiving and sending Bitcoins over the Lightning Network in the classroom. The effort is part of a ten-week program that will also teach them Bitcoin concepts like nodes, double-spending, and the Bitcoin halving.

Besides government efforts, El Salvador has also seen private projects set ambitious goals for Bitcoin education in the country. Mi Primer Bitcoin (My First Bitcoin), an international Bitcoin education project in El Salvador, plans to teach Bitcoin to 250,000 students in 2023.

The project claims to have taught 10,000 students so far in 2022. This is a 25-fold increase from the approximately 400 it has taught in 2021. It currently offers a Bitcoin diploma course which is sponsored by donors.

“We are focused on bringing free, independent, and unbiased bitcoin education to the world’s first bitcoin nation: El Salvador. The team is united by this mission, and we try to say yes to every opportunity that presents itself. to us,” the project said in a blog post.

The government led by President Nayib Bukele has also rolled out other policies to drive the mass adoption of Bitcoin. In November, President Bukele announced the creation of the National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC) under the supervision of the Ministry of Tourism.

According to Decree No. 49 which legalizes it, the new parapublic will manage all crypto-related projects. It will also be the first port of call for Bitcoiners looking to migrate to El Salvador. Moreover, it will serve as a bridge to organize meetings between individuals and the president for the implementation of Bitcoin and blockchain in the country.

As El Salvador promotes Bitcoin adoption, it has also added the asset to its national reserve. According to data from NayibTracker, since Bitcoin was announced as legal tender in September 2021, El Salvador has purchased around 2,460 BTC.

The platform tracks all BTC purchases from El Salvador using President Bukele’s announcements. According to his estimate, El Salvador is down 61.24% in its BTC investment, with an unrealized loss of over $67 million. BTC holdings from El Salvador bought for around $108 million are currently worth around $41 million.

Be that as it may, El Salvador is not phased by the status of its assets. President Bukele announced last month that El Salvador would buy 1 BTC per day. He was joined in the campaign by the founder of TRON, Justin Sun, and announced the discontinuation of the program.
