[ad_1]

Following news that his former friends and peers are cooperating with authorities, FTX crypto founder Sam Bankman-Fried is set to enter a plea during his arraignment in Manhattan, New York, next week.

Whether that plea proclaims his guilt or innocence remains to be seen, but Reuters reported on Wednesday (December 28th) that the disgraced founder of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which has since failed, is due to appear in court on January 3, 2023, in federal court in New York, according to court documents.

He will be brought before Judge Lewis Kaplan. Former Bankman-Frieds criminal judge Ronnie Abrams recused himself last week (December 23) because her husband is a partner at Polk Davis & Wardell, a law firm that advised the company of the Bankman-Frieds FTX cryptocurrency last year. Abramshusband, Greg Andres, was not associated with the work of FTX.

Bankman-Fried was charged by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) with eight counts ranging from wire fraud to various counts of conspiracy. Bankman-Fried has maintained his innocence in the events that led to the rapid implosion of his crypto empire and the loss of billions in misallocated client funds.

An indictment is the formal reading of the criminal charges against an accused in the presence of the accused. Its purpose is to ensure that the accused is fully aware of the charges.

After reading the charges, a defendant may enter a plea or, depending on the jurisdiction in which the arraignment is taking place, may choose not to submit one.

News of his expected plea follows news, as reported by PYMNTS, that Caroline Ellison, former CEO of FTX’s sister company Alameda Research, and Gary Wang, former CTO of FTX, have pleaded guilty. charges of fraud brought against them and agreed to cooperate with the authorities.

This news, which was kept under embargo by the media until Bankman-Fried was extradited to the United States, undoubtedly put pressure on the former crypto prodigy.

In Ellisons’ testimony, she described and admitted her guilt for a number of fraudulent acts in which she claims to have participated since 2019.

Prosecutors charged Bankman-Fried with both conspiracy and fraud of epic proportions. If convicted, he faces decades in prison.

He is currently on bail and residing with his parents on the Stanford University campus.
