SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – Sioux Falls police reported that a 69-year-old man was cheated out of nearly $20,000 through a bitcoin scam.
sergeant. Aaron Benson said the victim clicked on a computer pop-up which led to him receiving a phone call from someone claiming the victim’s computer had been hacked. The caller told the victim that the bank and the FBI were involved and that he had to pay a certain amount of money to fix the problem. The victim was instructed to transfer money through a bitcoin ATM.
Due to the $15,000 limit on Bitcoin ATMs, the man had to use two different ATMs in Sioux Falls to transfer $19,700.
sergeant. Benson reported that the incident is not uncommon as cases of bitcoin-related fraud are on the rise.
When I was a fraud detective, we didn’t hear that term at all, but over the past five years it’s pretty common now, Benson said.
Benson also said it was difficult to catch suspects because the perpetrators were not in Sioux Falls, often working from out of the country.
The police recommend that individuals ask questions and confirm the legitimacy of any request with their bank. They encourage people in a victim situation to call their family or the police before taking action.
