Square Enix, the Japanese gaming giant, is gearing up to announce more blockchain-based titles in 2023. As part of a now-traditional New Year’s letter published by the company’s CEO Yosuke Matsuda, the executive announced some of the actions Square Enix will take. regarding blockchain technology, and also reflected on several situations surrounding blockchain in 2022.

Square Enix Reflects on Blockchain Gaps of 2022

Blockchain technology is becoming an important part of several entertainment-based businesses around the world. Square Enix, the Japanese games company responsible for franchises such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, has revealed that some games using this technology are set to be announced in 2023.

The statements come from a New Year’s letter published by Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda, who sees 2022 as a year in which blockchain technology has gained greater prominence. Matsuda explains that last year could have been the year of the consolidation of decentralized technology in games. He stated:

I think it’s fair to say that blockchain has gained significant recognition as a field in 2022, as evidenced by the fact that ‘Web 3.0’ has become an established buzzword among business people. .

Matsuda acknowledges that while blockchain gaming was indeed at the forefront of the discussion of what makes games fun, most of that discussion was more focused on the monetization side of the technology. That’s changing, as Matsuda says the new vision sees blockchain technology as just “a means to an end.”

More Blockchain Games Coming Soon

Even with all the problems that arose in the crypto and blockchain ecosystems in 2022, the company is pushing its blockchain-related products to market this year, with Matsuda believing that blockchain gaming will move to a new stage of growth in 2023. On this he said:

Our group has several blockchain games based on original IPs in development, some of which we announced last year, and we are making preparations that will allow us to unveil even more titles this year.

However, the exec did not give further details on what new games might use blockchain technology this year. The company announced the launch of NFT-powered Symbiogenesis, an interactive experience, in November.

The company’s interest in this area was revealed by Matsuda in November 2021, with the company envisioning a “robust entry” into this sector as part of its business strategy. Since then, Matsuda has repeatedly supported the introduction of Web3 technologies into entertainment and gaming, even investing in other companies in the Web3 gaming space.
