Although Bitcoin (BTC) encountered one of the toughest times in 2022, the data indicates that the BTC blockchain still accounted for a significant number of transactions.
Despite falling prices, a staggering $8.2 trillion has been transferred through the Bitcoin blockchain in the past year. The figure equates to an average of $260,000 per second, according to data estimates from crypto analytics firm CoinMetrics.

The scale of the transaction in the midst of the bear market highlights the possible increased adoption of Bitcoins and its role in the broader financial system. According to the data, the number of transactions on the blockchain dropped significantly in the second half of the year in correlation with the movement of asset prices.
With Bitcoin plummeting for most of 2022, the number one digital asset by market capitalization saw a relief rally in early November after being boosted by positive macro factors. However, the recovery seems to have had a minimal impact on the number of transactions.
The trading volume may also be welcomed by Bitcoin proponents, who might view the data as a sign of assets maturing to gain integration into the mainstream financial sector. Interestingly, the prolonged bear market has led skeptics to suggest that Bitcoin is likely to dive to zero.
Notably, Bitcoin has operated in an environment of investor skepticism, with the asset hampered by factors such as rising inflation and regulatory uncertainty.
Bitcoin still faces uncertainty
At the same time, Bitcoin was hit by the collapse of the FTX crypto exchange, the effects of which are expected to ripple through 2023. The impact of the price correction has also caused Bitcoin millionaires to drop more 70% in 2022, according to a Finbold report.
Additionally, the price correction could expand further, given that Bitcoin is still operating in a high inflation environment with uncertainty regarding Federal Reserve monetary policy.
Indeed, if the market registers a rally, the amount transferred on the Bitcoin blockchain will probably increase.

As it stands, the flagship cryptocurrency also controls a market capitalization of around $324.37 billion. As economic uncertainty prevails, projections indicate that Bitcoin will likely experience a prolonged price correction in 2023.
In particular, PricePredictions machine learning algorithm indicates that the asset could be trading at $15,532 on January 31, 2023.
