Bitcoin Core Developer Hack Highlights Self-Custody Risks: Community Responds

With one of the main original developers of Bitcoins claiming that his balance was emptied by a hacker, the crypto community is unsure how normal people can manage to secure their own Bitcoin (BTC).

In a recent thread, Luke Dashjr claimed that some alleged attackers somehow gained access to his privacy key (PGP), which is from an encryption program that creates cryptographic authentication.

Members of the crypto community have raised concerns about how a senior Bitcoin developer known to be security-conscious could be compromised. Some believe this makes it difficult for normal people to adopt or secure their Bitcoin.

In a message, a Twitter user was shocked by the news, believing that few people would be able to help the developer and that there was little hope for most. They tweeted:

You were definitely one of the most security-conscious people I’ve known in this space, so that’s a little shocking. I’m not sure many would be able to get useful information, unfortunately.

While this can happen to you, there is little hope for most people, unfortunately.

Other members of the community echoed the sentiment and pointed out that if it could happen to Dashjr, there would be no problem for their grandmother. A Twitter user also brought massive adoption to the conversation. They think that if a top Bitcoin developer can’t keep their wallet safe, mass adoption is a pipe dream.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin analyst Namcios believes that these sentiments are not a fair assessment of the situation. The analyst pointed out that although Dashjr has a high level of Bitcoin knowledge, that doesn’t mean he can’t make mistakes.

Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao also responded to Dashjrs’ Twitter thread asking the developer if there is anything the crypto exchange can do to help. Zhao also promised that his security team would monitor assets and freeze BTC if any were deposited into his crypto exchange.

On November 14, the CEO of Binance recommended self-custody only with small amounts, as mistakes could become very costly. Zhao described self-care as a basic human right and urged the community to make sure they get it right. Besides Zhao, MicroStrategy President Michael Saylor also discussed the merits of self-custody amid FTX’s collapse. Saylor said Guardians accumulate too much power in a system where there is no self-guard.
