In a recent interview, Javier Gerardo Milei, Argentina’s 2023 presidential candidate, shared his thoughts on Bitcoin.
Milei is an Argentinian politician, businessman and economist who is currently the federal deputy for Buenos Aires. Milei supports the Austrian school of economic thought and considers himself a short-term minarchist, albeit philosophically anarcho-capitalist.
When asked during this interview if Bitcoin could be a monetary alternative in Argentina, Milei replied:
The first thing we need to understand is that the central bank is a scam. It is a mechanism by which politicians fool the right people with the inflationary tax. What Bitcoin represents is a return of money to its original creator: the private sector. Money is a private invention to be used to solve problems, for example in a barter economy, the double coincidence of needs and indivisibility. Then paper money seems to solve portability
And that was changing and the currencies that people were choosing were silver for small transactions and gold for bigger ones. Then, because at the time it was very difficult to move the gold, people deposited the gold and received a receipt in exchange. And then in the year 1445, during the first Genoese congress, the States appropriated the exclusivity to issue money that is legal tender, which is a key point because legal tender allows politicians to rip you off with an inflationary tax.
Bitcoin has an algorithm that will one day reach a certain amount and there is no more, and it can compete with other currencies, in fact it competes with Ethereum and such. And what is good? It’s the return of private money, but what’s the problem? The problem is that governments won’t give up legal tender because with legal tender they can rip you off with the inflationary tax.
Bitcoin is the natural reaction to central banks being scammed and money flowing back to the private sector. And the flip side is that thieving politicians won’t allow you to go against legal tender. In high inflation economies, the scam problem is greater. That’s why, as I suggest, you can propose to close the central bank.
