Twitter users appeared disgusted by the rising price of eggs and called it “ridiculous”, with some calling it a “luxury item”.
Several users noted the high cost of a box of eggs at Whole Foods and posted photos showing prices as high as $11.49.
“I never thought EGGS would become a luxury item,” wrote conservative commentator Mike Cernovich.

The price of eggs has tripled in some places in the United States over the past year, according to CBS News. The price per carton jumped 49.1% in November, according to the consumer price index.

“$11.49 for eggs at Whole Foods,” tweeted UFS veteran Jake Shields.
Other photos posted on Twitter showed empty fridges at various grocery stores and noted that the eggs were “completely sold out”.
Geneviève Roch-Decter, CEO of Grit Capital, a financial media company, called eggs the “new bitcoin” and posted a chart showing the average price of eggs skyrocketing.

Others, like writer Emily Hoeven, compared the empty shelves to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when stores ran out of toilet paper. “Looks like eggs are the new toilet paper,” she tweeted.

Another Twitter user weighed in on egg prices and claimed they were 99 cents over a year ago, compared to $3.49 at Harris-Teeter.
Rapper Cardi B recently slammed the overall grocery price hike earlier this month, calling the grocery prices “ridiculous.”
“Lettuce was like $2 a few months ago and now it’s like $7, of course I [going to] to say something. The f—?” she said.
Cardi B also said she couldn’t imagine how middle-class Americans reacted to high prices.
“Because if I think that c— is crazy, I can only imagine what middle-class people or neighborhood people [are] fucking thought,” she said.
“How can eggs cost more than a whole chicken? asked writer Michael Harriot.
“In my store, the manager said they were actually losing money on eggs despite the high prices,” Rob Zerwekh added.
