MetaMask warns crypto users of address poisoning

According to the MetaMask team, a new crypto wallet address scam that attempts to take advantage of user negligence is on the rise.

In an announcement, digital wallet provider MetaMask warned users about what’s called an address poisoning scam, where attackers poison transaction histories by sending users tokens worth $0. in their wallets. Scammers will use wallet addresses generated from custom address generators and match the first and last characters of their victims’ wallet address. This is done in the hope of tricking unsuspecting users into sending their funds to the wrong copy address.

Although the attempt does not give hackers access to user wallets, people who have taken to copying their wallet address from transaction history before sending asset balances could potentially send their funds to impersonated addresses.

For this reason, the wallet provider has warned users to always be cautious and double-check their transactions before sending their balances. The company pointed out that it would be best to verify every character of the wallet address to ensure that the funds will be sent to the correct wallet.

Apart from that, the company recommended users to stop copying wallet addresses from their transaction histories and using their address book when sending digital assets.
