Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Praises Metaverse’s ‘Sense of Presence’, Calls It ‘Game Changer’

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, gave his thoughts on the Metaverse and the impact the technology could have in the future. In a conversation with Klaus Schwab, President of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Nadella said the sense of presence achieved when interacting using metaverse technology is “game changing”.

Satya Nadella, CEO of tech giant Microsoft, has declared his support for the Metaverse, citing its potential for rapprochement with other less interactive technologies. In a conversation with Klaus Shwab, President of the World Economic Forum (WEF), held as part of the Davos 2023 meetings, Nadella praised the benefits that using this technology brings.

Nadel said:

For me, the most game-changing thing for this particular technology is the sense of presence one has, which is when you interact even virtually.

Nadella believes that while Covid-19 has changed the environment when it comes to meetings, forcing people to resort to video calling for these purposes, the implementation of more immersive technologies is a “very natural extension of that.” For him, this is the real impact that the metaverse and other technologies being developed can have on today’s society.

Microsoft, WEF and the Metaverse

Microsoft was recently revealed to be one of WEF’s partners in developing the Global Collaboration Village, a virtual replica of Davos in the metaverse. The goal of this digital world is to enable the organization to bring together leaders from around the world to participate in a constant conversation about global policies and issues. This would serve to extend the Davos meetings, which usually take place for a week, to become a constant event in the metaverse.

According to Schwab’s statements, there are already 70 or 80 companies behind this initiative, which is built with Mesh, a metaverse component that works in tandem with Teams, a team meeting application from Microsoft. Nadella was excited about the possibilities of this platform, saying:

To use this metaverse technology and these immersive experiences to bring the world together to have this sense of community and collaboration at the same time, I think is absolutely necessary.

Microsoft has actively invested in metaverse-related initiatives, moving resources to bridge parts of its technology stack to improve digital worlds. In October, the company announced that it was working on adapting its cloud platform for use in metaverse applications.

Contrary to Nadella’s views, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in a recent Reddit Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) session that he currently prefers artificial intelligence (AI) technology over technologies.
