US Senator Ted Cruz is pushing for crypto in Congress…using snacks

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz is pushing the United States Congress to embrace cryptocurrency in its halls using an incentive the two sides could agree on food.

Cruz introduced a competing resolution dated Jan. 25 that would only allow vending machines and food service providers that accept crypto as a payment option in the US Capitol.

If passed, the Architect of the Capitol, the Secretary of the Senate, and the Chief Executive of the House of Representatives would be required to find retail and grocery businesses that accept cryptocurrencies.

At the time of writing this report, the text of the resolution was not publicly available on the Congress website. It is unclear the potential cost of implementing the measure, or whether the resolution would require contractors to accept payment in certain cryptocurrencies.

Cointelegraph contacted Cruz’s office for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Cruz has long been a strong supporter of cryptocurrencies, praising Bitcoin (BTC) in particular for its decentralization. Around this time last year, the senator purchased between $15,000 and $50,000 worth of BTC, according to a financial disclosure.

He is one of only eight known crypto investors in Congress, according to the Bitcoin Politicians crowdsourced data project.

The list also includes Cynthia Lummis, the Wyoming senator behind a pro-crypto bill and Pat Toomey, a Pennsylvania senator who recently introduced a stablecoin bill aimed at creating a regulatory framework for payments.

Senator Cruz has also signaled his interest in making his home state of Texas an oasis for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, saying crypto mining could be used to monetize energy from oil and gas extraction and that the activity could be used as another means of storing energy. .

Cruz’s proposed resolution will need to pass both the Senate and the House before it can pass.
