A senator from the US state of Arizona presented a set of cryptocurrency bills, one of which seeks to make bitcoin legal tender. “Centralized digital currency controlled by central bankers is slavery. Decentralized bitcoin is freedom,” the legislator said.

Arizona Lawmaker Wants to Make Bitcoin Legal Tender

Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers introduced several crypto-related bills, including one to make bitcoin legal tender in her state.

“I kicked off my crypto bills today,” Rogers tweeted on Tuesday. The bills are co-sponsored by fellow Senate Republicans Jeff Weninger and JD Mesnard.

One of the bills proposes to make bitcoin legal tender. The legislation defines cryptocurrency as “the decentralized, peer-to-peer digital currency in which a record of transactions is kept on the bitcoin blockchain and new monetary units are generated by the computer solution of mathematical problems and which operates independently of a central bank.”

Another bill proposes to authorize state agencies to enter into “an agreement with a cryptocurrency issuer to provide a method of accepting cryptocurrency as a method of payment for fines, civil penalties, or other penalties. , rents, rates, taxes, fees, charges, revenues, financial obligations, and special assessments to pay any amount due to such agency or state.

Rogers introduced a similar bill to make bitcoin legal tender in Arizona last year, but it was quickly defeated. She tweeted last April:

In September 2021, El Salvador became the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender alongside the US dollar. Since then, the country, led by pro-bitcoin president Nayib Bukele, has purchased thousands of BTC for its treasury. Last November, Bukele announced that El Salvador was buying bitcoin every day.
