Do football and beer need saying more? Image: Getty Images
Did you enjoy last year’s Crypto Super Bowl? If so, I have bad news for you. Not as bad as if you received part of your salary in FTX cryptocurrency last year, but still a blow to those who have invested in the success of the industry. There will be no crypto ads during the Super Bowl on Sunday. However, in its place will be much more alcohol.
Ah yes, the most traditional way to send your money down a river to nowhere.
FTX had one of four cryptocurrency announcements during last year’s Super Bowl. The one from FTX featured the perfect celebrity spokesperson, Larry David. Who could be less confident and more dismissive about an alternate form of anything?
I hope Larry got paid in cash, because that company is no more. The company has filed for bankruptcy, lost its naming rights deal to the Miami Heats arena, its founder Samuel Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of fraud and conspiracy, and the company is threatening currently suing politicians if they don’t return Bankman-Frieds’ campaign contributions.
According to Associated Press Mae Anderson, there were a few deals for cryptocurrency ads that were close to being done, but nothing moved forward after the FTX issues made the rounds in the news.

Official NFL PRODUCTS
Official NFL Apple Watch Bands
Touchdown!MobyFox has teamed up with the NFL Players Association to bring mega fans a series of Apple Watch bands handcrafted from authentic football leather. Choose from groups with Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Mac Jones, Justin Fields, Josh Allen and Dak Prescott.
For adrenaline junkies, fret not. There will likely be a new Caesars commercial featuring JB Smoove and the Manning family as well as commercials for other sportsbooks. You will certainly all be represented on Super Bowl Sunday.
Who is making the big ad buys this year?
For people whose vice is liquid, the NFL and Fox are all thinking about you this year. According to the AP, although Bud Light gets the most airplay of any liquor company, the official NFL beer won’t be the only adult beverage advertised. Remy Martin, Heineken, Diageo and Molson Coors also bought advertising time.
Because after the fall of FTX, we should all be worried about damaging our long-term financial health in such a volatile industry. That money is far better placed at your local grocery store, Rite Aid, 7-Eleven, liquor store, beverage depot, bar, nightclub, or wherever alcohol is sold.
Why be stressed by losing large sums of money. Instead, slowly but happily shell out more than $15 at a time with the only chance of seeing a return on your investment by consuming too much. Then you can see the product you just invested in your mouth with your dinner.
As good a pitcher as Larry David was, he couldn’t save FTX and therefore Super Bowl 2023 could be the first and last Crypto Bowl. Well, maybe Budweiser will bring back the frogs.
