Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web online information system and an early Internet pioneer, is the latest to voice bearish views on Bitcoin and its peers, calling cryptocurrencies ” dangerous” in recent remarks.

“It’s just speculation. Obviously, it’s really dangerous,” the computer scientist said of cryptocurrencies in an episode of CNBC’s Beyond The Valley podcast released late last week. He said the strategy is for people who “want to have fun with the game”, adding that he doesn’t want to spend his time investing in purely speculative bets like Bitcoin.

Federal agencies have accelerated a crackdown on crypto companies and products in recent weeks and Berners-Lee is just the latest high-profile figure to speak out against crypto amid clouds of regulatory thunderstorm gathering in the United States.

Charlie Munger, the vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway (ticker: BRK.A and BRK.B), considered Warren Buffett’s right-hand man, said last week that “crypto crappo” is “worthless, it’s not not good, it’s crazy,” adding that he was “ashamed” that Bitcoin was not banned in the United States
