According to research by Dua Crypto, the Netherlands ranks as the European nation most interested in cryptocurrencies. Russia (where the local central bank is mostly negative on the asset class) is at the bottom of the list.
Bitcoin (BTC) is the most popular digital currency in most countries, while Dogecoin (DOGE) is second.
The Dutch have reached the top
The study estimated that residents of the Netherlands conducted the most crypto-related searches per capita (0.1299). The top digital asset by market capitalization – Bitcoin – is the favorite among locals, while the popular memecoin – Dogecoin – and Cardano are second and third respectively.
Slovenia ranks second with 0.1181 searches per capita, while Switzerland completes the top three with an index of 0.0888. Bitcoin, Dogecoin and Ethereum are the most popular digital assets in the two Alpine countries.
This is not the first time that Slovenia has made headlines. Airline Fast Private Jet has described it as the most crypto-friendly nation in the world, as it has the most sites where digital currencies are accepted as a form of payment. At the same time, its capital – Ljubljana is the most welcoming destination in Europe for blockchain companies.
Dua Crypto determined that Russia is the least interested European country in digital assets (0.0050 searches per capita). National authorities are not quite open to the asset class, with the central bank proposing an outright ban on them last year.
Belarus and Moldova (states of the former Soviet Union) are also at the bottom of the list, with indices of 0.0080 and 0.0069.
What about on a global scale?
Cryptocurrency price tracker CoinGecko rolled out a similar study last summer, finding Nigeria to be the most crypto-curious nation in the world. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Singapore, which have recently become blockchain hubs, ranked second and third.
Bobby Ong – Co-founder of CoinGecko – said that residents of these countries are the most inclined to “buy the dip” and have mostly jumped on the long-term bandwagon.
Apart from the huge enthusiasm for the asset class, a large portion of Nigerians seem to be HODLers. KuCoin research from April 2022 suggested that around one in three adults in the African nation are exposed to cryptocurrencies.
The exchange argued that interest could be propelled by limited access to traditional financial services in the region.
