Anthony Scaramucci is bullish as ever, says Bitcoin is ‘definitely a commodity’

Despite all the beatings he’s received from his interest in crypto markets, Skybridge CEO Anthony Scaramucci says he hasn’t lost his enthusiasm for Bitcoin.

I am not a cold figure in this space. I am not an evangelist. I’m not one of those religious figures who is going to sing Bitcoin ber alles no matter what happens in life, he told Decrypt during a recent interview for the gm podcast. So I want to frame it from that perspective and then tell you that I’m more optimistic now than I’ve ever been.

It faces strong headwinds. By the time Sam Bankman-Frieds crypto exchange FTX filed for bankruptcy in November, he had become professionally and personally close to Scaramucci. They teamed up to host the Crypto Bahamas conference last April. In September, FTX acquired a 30% stake in SkyBridge for $40 million. And when the Bankman-Frieds empire went bankrupt, Scaramucci told CNBC he was working to buy back the shares.

Now he has his eyes set on the next bitcoin boom cycle and hopes regulators can get out of their own way. According to him, Bitcoin really started to gain interest from a wider audience from late 2021 to late 2022.

Before that, there was a kind of microbrewery known as Bitcoin. And people liked the beer that came out of the microbrewery, Scaramucci said. And then all of a sudden there was this Budweiser Light distribution explosion where everyone in the world and their mom was talking about bitcoin.

But he wouldn’t go so far as to call himself a Bitcoin maximalist. They have no desire to compromise, Scaramucci said. They have guns and cooked meals in their basement and they hate the government.

He had harsh words for regulators, particularly Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler.

Nothing he does makes sense to me, Scaramucci said. He has the SEC in disarray. He also postulated that Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren was acting as Washington’s shadow chair for financial services.

So he takes solace in the fact that, at least in his view, Bitcoin should be classified as a commodity and not regulated by the SEC.

I think it looks like money to me and like a commodity, he said. I think those things that win, or you have those staking positions where the foundation gives you more of something, I think anything that has a win mechanism is probably a safety.

The last word

Scaramucci said: We need it, you guys know. Hong Kong is open for business for crypto. They are not stupid. They say, Ah, the United States is going to blow this up. It’s okay, we’re going to change positions. United Kingdom: they screwed up with Brexit. They all know this, but they are open for business for crypto. You know, our so-called socialist neighbors to the north have two or three bitcoin cash ETFs. We have Gary Gensler and Elizabeth Warren.
