What happened
It was a crazy day for crypto investors, but this time for positive reasons.
The overall cryptocurrency sector jumped 6.7% in the past 24 hours, as of 11:30 a.m. ET Wednesday. Arbitrum (CRYPTO:ARB) is among the top gainers today, rising 12.7% over the same period.
The move comes as Arbitrum announced today that it has completed its airdrop of ARB tokens (worth over $120 million) on projects built on the network. Since the announcement of this airdrop on April 23rd, Arbitrum has underperformed, although today’s gains essentially erase all of the decline related to the announcement of this plan.
So what
The entire crypto industry is seeing renewed interest today, as a way for investors to hedge against what appears to be a more protracted banking crisis than previously thought. The First Republic (FRC -21.48%) saw its share price plunge this morning after the regional bank announced that more than $100 billion in deposits had been taken out of the bank in the previous quarter. As a result, virtually all digital assets are gaining today as investors look for ways to diversify their portfolios and hedge against specific risks.
However, Arbitrum’s outsized gain suggests there is more to the story. The project’s massive $120 million airdrop has raised concern among many investors.
Much of this related to previous proposals, which would have allocated a significant portion of this airdrop to Arbitrum’s own treasury. And specific projects had suggested they would liquidate their Arbitrum holdings once the airdrop took place, which angered the community but also kept some investors away.
However, with the airdrop and what appears to be less than expected selling pressure on this token, investors seem to be catching their breath.
Now what
Arbitrum is a key scaling solution for the Ethereum network (ETH -0.00%), enabling faster and cheaper transactions on the world’s largest decentralized finance blockchain. As a result, it is a relatively early digital currency that is attracting interest from many in the crypto community, due to its impressive adoption so far.
However, concerns around the airdrop of this project have certainly taken to the air in Arbitrum in recent weeks. With that headwind out of the way, it seems many are looking to Arbitrum as a way to play momentum-driven moves in this space and are seeing outsized gains.
I’ll keep an eye on this project to see how it performs from here. But suffice it to say, today’s move is certainly impressive, and not what I expected to see with Arbitrum.
