New Brunswick’s main power company began refusing energy applications from crypto miners and other large-scale users in 2022, CBC reported on May 1.
The cabinet order that approved the moratorium included the concerns of the province’s main power company. NB Power expressed concern about the additional load demand and warned that crypto mining could put significant pressure on energy supply.
It’s unclear exactly when the moratorium on energy access for crypto miners began, as the policy apparently went unnoticed until CBC’s latest coverage.
However, the New Brunswick provincial government approved the moratorium in March 2022, and the CBC’s latest report says the policy remains in place.
The New Brunswick government has also ordered a review of the crypto industry and its impact on energy supply. This order remains private but was due in December 2022 and was intended to ensure restrictions did not continue to affect non-crypto businesses.
The moratorium was introduced shortly after a crypto-mining company, Taal Distributed Information Technologies, expressed its intention to start operations in New Brunswick. Another company, Hive Blockchain Technologies, is already operating in the province.
Other Canadian provinces, including British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec, have imposed similar moratoriums. In the United States, North Carolina and New York have imposed restrictions. These policies may or may not remain in place.
