Crypto prices slipped on Thursday as investors weighed a report on two of the largest institutional liquidity providers recalling their crypto-trading activities in the United States
Bitcoin fell nearly 3% to $26,937.29, according to Coin Metrics, while Ether lost 3.1% to trade at $1,793.82. They are about to end the week down more than 8% and 9%, respectively.
Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Jane Street and Jump Crypto, two of the biggest crypto market makers, would take a step back from U.S. crypto trading as regulators across the country continue their crackdown on the emerging industry. CNBC’s “Crypto World” reached out to the companies. Jane Street declined to comment and Jump did not respond.
“Generally, we’re going to see much larger price swings in both directions as many large market makers have significantly reduced their supply,” said David Wells, CEO of EnclaveMarkets.
“Large market makers create more price stability because of the liquidity they provide,” he added. “You will see more frequent gaps from top to bottom as order books are generally thinner.”

In late February, the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency issued a joint statement warning banks of the liquidity risks associated with bank crypto companies.
New market illiquidity became a bigger theme after the shutdown of Silvergate and Signature Bank, which operated the two main fiat gateways to the crypto market.
Bitcoin hit the $30,000 level a month ago for the first time since June and has struggled to top any longer since then. It has been floating between this threshold and the upper part of the $26,000 level since then. Investors, however, were not fazed by the downward moves.
Chart analysts watched $25,200 as a key threshold before worrying about a more significant decline.
