Jurrien Timmer, director of global macro at Fidelity, recently commented on the state of Bitcoin, comparing its current market momentum to that of gold.

Timmer suggests that Bitcoin is now walking in step with gold, but warns that the major cryptocurrency may have gotten a bit ahead of itself, hinting at potential overvaluation at the $30,000 mark. .

In his analysis, Timmer found an 88% inverse correlation between Bitcoin and the real two-year yield of TIPS, and a 63% inverse correlation with the real rate derived from PCE. This correlation analysis, based on data since 2018, puts Bitcoin in a similar position to gold in terms of reacting to real rate factors.

Simply put, what Timmer is suggesting here is that Bitcoin price tends to move in the opposite direction of these two economic indicators. If the yields of certain government bonds increase, or if inflation increases, we can expect the price of Bitcoin to generally fall, and vice versa. It is important to note, however, that these are only trends; they don’t happen every time, and other factors can influence Bitcoin’s price as well.

@TimmerFidelityTimmer’s image also highlighted a key difference in the regression models for Gold and Bitcoin. Gold follows a linear regression, while that of Bitcoin is exponential. Timmer interprets this as a sign of Bitcoin’s role as a “high-powered inflation hedge.” This powerful hedging potential, coupled with its growing popularity among investors, has positioned Bitcoin as a very ambitious asset.

The executive’s insights highlight Bitcoin’s strong correlation to gold, but his caution about Bitcoin’s potential overvaluation highlights the need for investor caution.

The price of Bitcoin has fallen to its lowest since March 17, falling more than 12% since May 6, decoupling from traditional risk assets like the Nasdaq.
