PUNE: A 46-year-old software engineer from Wadgaonsheri was duped out of around Rs 1 crore by scammers under the guise of giving good returns by investing in cryptocurrencies. The complainant started investing the money from September 20, 2021. Talking about the progress of the investigation, Senior Cybercrime Police Inspector Minal Patil said, “We have been looking for details about the phone numbers that were used to send messages via an internet messaging app. We have also written to online exchange companies for details of e-wallets. Replies from relevant authorities are awaited.” The under -Inspector Angat Nemane said, “The scammers contacted the technician on an internet messaging app and added his phone number to a group where members discussed different cryptocurrencies and profits derived from them.” He added, “The tech contacted the scammers on the app and expressed his interest in investing in cryptocurrencies. He invested smaller amounts first and got good returns. The technician gained access to an account on a website where he could view details regarding the investments made in cryptocurrencies and the returns received so far.” After gaining the confidence of the technician, the suspects asked him to invest more money to get better returns.” The technician believed that they were genuine cryptocurrency traders and decided to invest his money. He used his savings of around Rs 50 lakh and took out another personal loan of 50 lakh from banks and friends,” Nemane told the site. “One fine day, the technician found out that the suspects deactivated his account and stopped communicating with him. He made numerous attempts to contact them on a messaging app but failed to connect. The scammers then contacted him and sent him emails promising to return the invested money with interest. However, they demanded that the technician pay an additional Rs 5 lakh. That’s when the technician realized he had been duped,” Nemane said. The technician initially filed a complaint request following which a preliminary investigation was conducted. technician was not available for comment when TOI attempted to reach him by phone.
