The Bloomfield Township Police Department is investigating a reported theft of $204,024 in Bitcoin from a resident.
According to the police, the victims’ personal mobile phone was hacked through a SIM card swap.
SIM swapping, also known as SIM hijacking, occurs when the hacker takes control of someone’s cell phone number and then tricks the cell phone provider into transferring that number to a mobile device controlled by the hacker. The hacker then accesses online accounts linked to this mobile number.
This recent Bloomfield Township case was reported on May 9. The victim, who lives on Pine Tree Trail, reportedly told police that the large sum of Bitcoin was withdrawn from his Coinbase account.
