Amid US Turmoil, UK Crypto Industry Remains Bullish

[ad_1]

Can the UK crypto industry benefit from the regulatory turmoil in America? The industry and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak certainly hope so. The US crypto sector could be under siege. But some in the UK are finding grounds for optimism despite – or precisely because of – the crackdown.

The UK looks set to benefit from regulatory hostility and uncertainty in the US, say members of the UK crypto industry. Unlike their counterparts across the pond, the relationship between crypto and government looks promising. And companies in the global industry tend to look for opportunities.

A pro-crypto prime minister

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been a vocal proponent of crypto since entering Downing Street last October. But his enthusiasm for technology actually dates back to his time as finance minister under Boris Johnson. His short stint in the executive position was generally well received by the industry.

Just months after taking office, Sunak has already drawn up plans to become a global crypto hub. “We want to see the businesses of tomorrow, and the jobs they create, here in the UK,” he said in a tweet. Others took note.

We have a prime minister and a city minister who understand that the world is changing rapidly, Simon Jennings, executive director of the UK Cryptoasset Business Council, told BeInCrypto.

They understand that if they are successful, the UK can attract investment, create new jobs, leverage tax revenue and create a whole wave of game-changing products and services that will kick off a digital revolution.

With a nascent crypto industry and many laws yet to be written, companies are optimistic about what the country can do. Brexit, which generally divides opinion in other areas, is rather a unifier among blockchain aficionados.

Exiting the European Union left the UK free to forge its own regulatory path and be nimble in its approach, Jennings continued. A point on which many agree.

The city minister recently pledged to put in place a regulatory framework within 12 months much faster than MiCA.

There are areas where Britain seems an outlier, such as with its crackdown on crypto ATMs. But generally speaking, members of the industry are hopeful.

Positive relationships

A recent Treasury Select Committee report made a number of suggestions. He proposed that the UK regulate consumer trading in unbacked crypto in the same way as gambling. (Special Treasury Committees are formal groups of MPs independent of government. They don’t write laws.) Although the Treasury has previously pushed back on this idea, according to the UK Cryptoasset Business Council.

The UK remains the financial epicenter of Europe, and further crypto integration should significantly increase this,” said Mike Crosbie, interim CEO of poundtoken, the issuer of the first regulated GBP stablecoin.

Despite recent headlines, our leaders understand that proper regulation of the crypto industry starts with the major players in the industry. Ultimately, we believe a favorable environment is coming, Crosbie continued.

Support does not just come from the national government. Our local MP has been very helpful in opening doors for us and helping us grow, said Joe David, CEO of Myna, a crypto accounting firm.

People also regard the nation’s capital as a leading financial center, if not the largest in the world. And therefore as a source of optimism. London regularly tops the charts as the world’s top crypto hub.

In 2022, the UK financial and professional services sector generated a trade surplus of 64 billion, the largest in the world. UK tech companies have also raised a substantial $24 billion investment. Exceeding the combined investments of France and Germany, which total 11.8 billion and 9.1 billion when converted from euros to pounds.

According to David, the European Union is at a disadvantage. In part because of the relative pace of its regulatory streamlining.

Those who think the EU will race ahead and cut red tape probably haven’t paid attention to the past 40 years, David continued.
