The Bali government has reportedly warned tourists that they will face heavy penalties for any payment made using cryptocurrencies.
According to a new report from Channel News Asia, Bali Governor Wayan Koster is sending a strong message to foreign tourists that crypto is an illegal form of payment, including in hotels, restaurants and small businesses.
Kosters’ remarks came during a Sunday news conference related to tourism, according to the report.
said Koster,
Foreign tourists who behave inappropriately, do activities that are not permitted in their visa permit, use crypto as payment, and violate other provisions will be dealt with firmly.
Other government officials joined Foster, including Bali’s Chief Inspector General of Police, Putu Jayan Danu Putra.
Koster describes some of the penalties that violators of crypto payments could face.
Strict measures range from eviction, administrative penalties, criminal penalties, closure of business premises and other severe penalties.
Koster also issued a warning that in Indonesia it is forbidden to use currencies other than rupiah. Fines for this include imprisonment for up to one year and a maximum fine of 200 million rupees, or about $13,300.
said Koster,
“Persons who engage in foreign exchange business without the permission of Bank Indonesia may be punished with imprisonment for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years, and a minimum fine of 50 million of rupees and a (fine) of up to 22 billion rupees Violations will be subject to administrative sanctions in the form of written reprimands, obligations to pay fines and bans on payment transactions.
Although crypto is banned as a payment method in Indonesia, the country allows people to hold crypto as an asset, according to Channel News Asia.
