US Senator Warren faces backlash on Twitter for new stance

Several members of the crypto community have criticized Senator Warren’s latest stance on how crypto is used by illegal actors for their activities.

In a June 3 tweet, the Democratic senator reiterated her concerns about the adverse effects of cryptocurrency. She said, “Rogue nations, oligarchs and drug lords are using crypto to launder billions in stolen funds, evade sanctions and fund terrorism.”

For this reason, Senator Warren wants to introduce a bill that will end the illegal use of cryptocurrencies and bring order to the industry. She added that the bill would “close loopholes and apply common sense rules to the industry.”

However, many in the community criticized his statement, pointing out that transactions in the space are transparent and traceable. BitGO COO Chen Fang said crypto transactions are traceable and “the worst conduit for illicit activity.” Fan added:

“It’s almost certain that the USD is the currency of choice for these matters.”

Several others corroborated this view and suggested that authorities could trace the transactions. Meanwhile, others joked that Pablo Escobar would agree with her that crypto was responsible for funding drug trafficking.

Warren’s Anti-Crypto Stand

Meanwhile, Warren’s latest statement follows his argument that the crypto was being used for fentanyl trading. Citing research data from Elliptic, lawmakers urged more crypto regulations to combat the threat of drugs.

The elliptical research indicated that Chinese companies selling chemicals to make fentanyl received around $27 million in Bitcoin and USDT. This amount could produce $54 billion worth of fentanyl at market value.

Senator Warren is an outspoken critic of cryptocurrencies and has mentioned that she will form an anti-crypto army in her campaign for re-election. She also questioned the value of cryptocurrencies and supported a government-backed CBDC.

A Divided Congress

Warren’s comment comes days after top Republican leaders released a bill to regulate crypto. The proposed bill has drawn support from several crypto players who believe it would bring much-needed clarity to the industry.

On the other hand, a leaked memo showed the anti-crypto stance taken by Democratic Party politicians. The notice raised concerns in the space, with many saying lawmakers barely understand the sector they seek to regulate.
