Presidential Pro-Bitcoin (BTC) bidder Ron DeSantis has been accused of allegedly using AI-generated imagery in an ad campaign smearing rival and former President Donald Trump.
It comes amid a rise in AI-generated deep fakes used in ads and political movements in recent months.
On June 5, the DeSantis campaign tweeted a video purporting to show Trump’s strong support for Anthony Fauci, Trump’s chief medical adviser when he was president of the United States.
Fauci is a controversial figure in GOP circles for, among other reasons, his handling of the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic that many considered brutal.
The video features a collage of real footage depicting Trump and Fauci mixed with what appears to be AI-generated footage of the pair hugging with some depicting Trump appearing to kiss Fauci.
The Twitter Community Notes showcases the platform’s Community Misinformation Dispelling Project, adding a disclaimer to the tweet calling it “AI-generated images”.
AFP Fact Check, a department of news agency Agence France-Presse, said the images had “the characteristics of AI-generated images”.

DeSantis and Trump are squaring off to take the Republican presidential nominee. DeSantis launched his offer last month in a Twitter space and promised to protect Bitcoin’s current polls making him follow Trump.
AI in the political sphere
Other politicians have used AI-generated media to attack rivals, even the Trump campaign is guilty of using AI to smear DeSantis.
Shortly after DeSantis announced his candidacy for president, Trump posted a video mocking DeSantis’ Twitter-based announcement, using deep audio to create a fake Twitter gap featuring DeSantis’ likeness Elon Musk, George Soros, Adolf Hitler, Satan and Trump.

In April, the Republican Party released an ad with its predictions of what a second term for President Joe Biden would look like, which was filled with AI-generated imagery that depicted a dystopian future.

New Zealand Politics also recently featured AI-created media with the country’s opposing National Party using generated imagery to attack the ruling Labor Party in several social posts in May.

One image depicts Polynesian hospital staff, another shows several masked men robbing a jewelry store, and a third image depicts a woman in a house at night, all generated using AI tools.
