My four-year experience as the founder of the Bitcoin Embassy Bar in the heart of Mexico City has given me valuable insights and lessons about building crypto communities. Here are some tips to make your trip easier, wherever you go.

Leaders are not taxed. They are chosen.

One of the most common mistakes when starting a community is thinking that the people who will be part of it will automatically see you as a leader just because you hold that position. Being the leader of a community requires sacrifice, as you will invest more effort, time, and work than any other member of your fledgling group. Being consistent, dependable, and attentive to the needs of others is the key to proving yourself worthy of guiding everyone’s path. Sharing ideas related to bitcoin, which are sometimes popular and sometimes quite unpopular, can be a challenge. However, if you show sufficient conviction and knowledge, you can convince others to follow you.

Become the link that connects everyone.

Finding physical or virtual meeting points is important because it is in these spaces that you will plant the seed that will gradually grow. Consistency is crucial, and if at first no one follows you or only one person attends your meetings, don’t be discouraged. The important thing is to continue regardless of the numbers. Whether it’s one person or 50 people, each one is important. Pay attention to each of them and show that you will be the strong enough link to keep them all connected. Bitcoin has both market ups and downs, which correspond to fluctuating media attention. Learn to navigate and take advantage of this constant fluctuation. Those with whom you manage to establish a strong connection will continue to stand by your side.

Your job is to be a leader, not a judge.

In a diverse community, it would be a mistake to think that a group made up of human beings with different realities, histories and backgrounds will be homogeneous. When playing your leadership role, it is important to do so with understanding and tolerance. You attract more flies with honey than with vinegar. Even if you think someone’s way of thinking doesn’t match yours, it’s important to accept that differences are inevitable, as long as they aren’t completely opposite or contrary to your goal. Within the crypto community, there are differences and even rivalries. However, knowing how to listen and express your opinions without judging or attacking others will be key to forming a supportive community.

Share your vision and others will share your goal.

Speaking with sincerity and openness builds trust within your group. When you present your goals with this same spirit and as a vision that can help everyone, it will be much easier to create a sense of belonging in your community. This, in turn, will generate engagement from you and your members. If your goal is to create a community around a common interest in bitcoin, share your ideas, values, and philosophy on the subject with as much honesty as possible. This way, everyone will be able to understand your perspective on bitcoin as a tool of freedom and sovereignty that empowers individuals. People attracted to bitcoin for different reasons will filter out.

Remember, you don’t own the absolute truth

When we find ourselves in a position of leadership, it is easy to assume that all the decisions we make will be correct and that all ideas must come from us. A good leader listens to the ideas and opinions of others. The collective mind is a more creative mind that can come up with solutions that a solitary mind could never have imagined. Plus, people in your community will always appreciate feeling heard and will actively participate alongside you.

These are just some of the basic guidelines I have followed to build my community, which despite the passing years continues to come into my space. Every time I organize an event, it is extremely satisfying to see not only familiar faces, but also new people gradually joining. Together we are building a community where people support each other in growth whether we are in a bull or bear market.
