A New Jersey man has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison after exchanging sexually explicit videos and images with a 13-year-old New Yorker and later paying $20,000 in bitcoins to have her killed, before cancel it.

John Michael Musbach, 34, of Haddonfield, was sentenced to 78 months in prison on Tuesday at a hearing in Camden, according to federal prosecutors. He will also have to serve three years of probation after prison.

Musbach pleaded guilty in February to using interstate commercial facilities in the commission of a murder-for-hire conspiracy.

He started communicating with the girl online in 2015 and eventually began using these chats to request and receive sexually explicit videos and photographs of the girl, and send her similar videos and images of himself. . The girls’ parents discovered the nature of the talks and notified law enforcement in New York State, where they lived.

Musbach was arrested for child pornography in March 2016 and pleaded guilty to child endangerment in October 2017. He received a two-year suspended prison sentence and life parole.

In May 2016, Musbach began communicating with the administrator of a darknet murder-for-hire site while his criminal case was pending, officials said. After being asked if the girl was too young to be targeted and being told age was not an issue, prosecutors said Musbach paid around $20,000 in bitcoins for the hit.

When asked for an additional $5,000 to secure the hit, Musbach eventually sought to cancel and demanded his $20,000 back. The website administrator later revealed that the site was a scam and threatened to reveal Musbach’s information to law enforcement.

Federal prosecutors have not said how the plot was discovered.

But, when he was arraigned in 2020, prosecutors said an informant passed messages to the Department of Homeland Security between Musbach and the bogus contract killing website.
