There is just something about cryptocurrency that lends itself to wild speculation. Blame it on the younger population, lewd risk tolerance or simple financial nihilism in response to the housing market depression.
Either way, blockchain-powered prediction markets are a great fit for crypto. These platforms allow anyone to open bets on any topic with all gambits settled by smart contracts, paid in crypto.
The permissionless nature of blockchains means that all topics are fair. Polygons Polymarket sparked controversy earlier this month for facilitating betting on the outcome of the OceanGate Titanic submarine tragedy, for example.
Polymarket works like this: users buy or sell what are called earnings shares, which are worth either $1 or nothing depending on whether the associated earnings actually occur.
The odds offered by the blockchain easily reflect what crypto users think about world events. From Oppenheimer vs. Barbie to the veracity of the weather, here are the top highlights from Polymarket right now.
Zuck and Musk, billionaire brawlers
Ever since Metas Mark Zuckerberg sent Send Me Location to Twitter/Tesla boss Elon Musk last week, the internet has wondered if the controversial billionaires would really go head-to-head MMA-style, just because.
In this case, the market is scheduled to end at midnight, July 1 (tomorrow). Most are betting against a fight announced before that date. Yes earnings shares go for $0.05 each, while no shares are sold for $0.97.
Crypto Players Don’t Expect An Imminent Announcement, Even As Italy Offers The Colosseum
Those betting on a fight being announced are currently receiving $1,653.48 1,553% back and those who think it won’t happen will only see $103.09 or 3.09% back.
Another market with a longer expiration will likely drop after it expires, given the amount wagered.
Will Kylian Mbappé leave Paris Saint-Germain?
Mbappé further cemented his footballing superstardom by becoming PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer earlier this year.
And while a recent statement said he was not renewing his contract with the club, fans were confused when he flip-flopped on Twitter, saying he will continue at PSG next season.
Polymarket users are basically divided on what will happen next. Yes, shares indicating whether Mbappé will leave PSG cost $0.58, while no shares pay $0.57.
The odds on this one are more volatile
This means that $100 on the superstar wearing different colors, if announced now, would net $154.59, while those betting on him to stay would get $172.79.
The Nuclear Showdown of the Barbies in Hollywood
Christoper Nolans Oppenheimer a three-hour epic about the man who led the fateful Manhattan Project for the atomic bomb opens one day after Greta Gerwigs Barbie.
The two films couldn’t be more separated by the cinematic spectrum, and the contrast has spawned endless memes and sports rivalry between their respective camps on social media.
Naturally, we have a Polymarket for that: Will Barbie or Oppenheimer fetch more on opening weekend?
Barbie is by far the absolute favorite
Crypto gamblers bet heavily on Barbie. These shares cost $0.95 and pay out $105.26 on a $100 bet. Oppenheimer shares, on the other hand, are worth $0.07 and return $1,375 if they earn more than 1,275% in return.
19 or more US hurricanes with a name this year
The North Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and continues until the end of November. And there have already been three tropical storms with names Arlene, Bret and Cindy.
Twenty-one names have been shortlisted for all the storms occurring this year, including Franklin, Irma, Gert and Tammy.
Polymarket users can bet that at least 19 US hurricanes will be strong enough to warrant their own nickname. Yes, shares are worth $0.40 and non are worth $0.68.
Hurricane betting goes all the way even though the season is just getting started
So $100 on a confirmed brutal hurricane season would roughly double the silver while the reverse would increase it by almost half. (Similar ratings are offered for whether NASA would consider 2023 the hottest year on record.)
Bet on the BlackRocks ETF offer without buying bitcoin
Market sentiment on the possibility of BlackRock winning its bid to launch a spot bitcoin ETF is somewhat murky.
Bitcoin pumped around 15% after BlackRocks filed. But savvy participants might now wonder if a green light from the SEC has already been priced in.
Polymarket supports betting on something more granular: whether the SEC would approve BlackRock by August 31, 2023.
The markets are not convinced. Yes, shares can be purchased for $0.19, returning $371.61 on $100. The opposite is offered for $0.84, which means only 17.72% potential gains right now.
You can still hedge your bitcoin purchases from BlackRock with Polymarket
Among other particular markets worth mentioning, will Kanye announce he is running for president by July 11? (most say no) and Will a nuclear weapon explode by December 31? (much closer than it should be).
For what it’s worth, most Polymarket bettors believe the Democratic Party will win next year’s US presidential election, despite cryptos unwarranted reputation for being openly right-wing.
Although it is quite close. $100 on the Democrats is on track to pay $167.07, while the reverse pays $204.08. These odds are similar to the aggregates shared by Oddschecker.
