Meta plans to launch its new Twitter rival, Threads, on July 6, just days after Twitter’s rate limit debacle, which temporarily capped the number of messages users can read per day.

The platform, which is heavily tied to photo and video sharing social network Instagram, is set to release on Thursday according to a countdown site launched by Meta. Threads also appeared for pre-order on Apple’s App Store with an expected date of July 6.

Despite an arguably well-timed launch, the app seems to have seen limited fanfare, at least from Twitter’s passionate crypto community.

Concerns have been raised about data mining and privacy issues and a lack of trust in the standalone app would even survive.

Crypto Twitter influencer Tiffany Fong, who has 66,600 followers on the platform, told Cointelegraph that she hadn’t even heard of Threads until now, saying “I have no idea what what is the Meta alternative. Fong has an active Instagram account with 10,400 followers.

Meanwhile, an ongoing Twitter poll from crypto influencer Kyle Chass, a self-proclaimed Bitcoin and crypto OG, saw over 87% of 125 respondents flag their support for Team Twitter on Team Meta.

Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey pointed to the Threads app’s privacy policy which stated that Threads developer Instagram Inc would have access to a wide range of user data, including financial information and login details. .

However, Twitter has almost exactly the same permissions as Threads and collects similar data, according to researchers responding to Dorsey’s post.

Others have expressed concerns about the app’s possible longevity given that Metas’ previous standalone app launches have either been halted or the features have been rolled into its other products.

What Meta doesn’t want you to remember is that they already shut down Threads in December 2021 after shutting down another standalone app called Direct,” said Nick St. Pierre, a Twitter user who posts. on developments in artificial intelligence.

They have a habit of releasing standalone apps to get attention, shutting them down, and then rolling out the features in [Instagram].

Metas expected the Threads launch to come just days after Twitter’s rate limit debacle, which imposed a temporary restriction on the number of posts a user can view in a day.

Instead of users having to rebuild a following from scratch, Threads will transfer users’ followers and following lists from Instagram.

According to reports earlier this year, a company spokesperson said the standalone Threads app would support ActivityPub, the decentralized social networking protocol that powers Twitter rival Mastodon.

Meanwhile, Twitter’s decentralized rival Mastodon has seen a recent surge in activity with an increase in the number of active users since Twitter imposed its viewing restrictions.
