Britain’s financial watchdog is calling on crypto firms to comply with regulators’ new rules for ads by October.
The Financial Conduct Authority’s new rules target how companies communicate information about their crypto-related products on websites, apps, social media and online advertisements.
Even crypto businesses based elsewhere in the world with ads that reach UK-based individuals will have to comply with the rules, according to a July 4 notice.
Once the scheme comes into force on October 8, there will be four legal avenues for crypto businesses to market to UK consumers, including regulator permission and exemptions.
Crypto firms that market to UK consumers have been asked to consider which avenues they will take and how they will handle UK customers if they cannot market to them.
The FCA has imposed an August 4 deadline for these companies to respond to the steps they will take to prepare for the regime.
What if crypto ignores UK rules?
The FCA has warned that it would be difficult for companies to illegally promote crypto to UK consumers.
Companies or individual promoters who flout these rules could end up with up to two years in prison, pay unlimited fines, or both.
The regulator expects a key way to comply is to register under the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing regulations. There are registration fees and approval can take up to three months.
Any company hoping to be helped through the process will need to find independent legal advice, rather than turning to the FCA for help.
Last year, UK regulators banned a Lodon advertising campaign for the Floki Inu memecoin
Last year, more than 50 cryptocurrency companies in the UK found themselves the recipients of enforcement notices, which asked them to review their advertising practices.
They have been accused of engaging in misleading consumer advertising and acting in a socially irresponsible manner.
The UK Advertising Standard Authority has ruled that companies cannot fear missing out on potential investors when it comes to digital assets.
