AI can send Bitcoin $BTC payments using new tools from Lightning Labs

Add this to the list of tasks that artificial intelligence (AI) is now capable of: Sending bitcoins.

AI applications such as the OpenAIs GPT series can now hold, send and receive bitcoin (BTC) using a suite of new tools that Lightning infrastructure company Lightning Labs unveiled on Thursday.

The AI ​​industry exploded in popularity after the viral debut of OpenAIs ChatGPT last November. Open AI is an artificial intelligence research company and ChatGPT is one of its advanced chatbots which has attracted over 100 million users just two months after its launch. ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM), software that is trained on large sets of data and can then generate human-like text in response to user prompts.

Lightning Labs says a glaring problem with current LLMs is the lack of a native internet-based payment mechanism they can use. This forces AI platforms to rely on outdated payment methods like credit cards and pass the costs of using those methods onto end users, limiting use cases and reducing general access to AI software.

Enter Lightning a second layer payment network for cheaper and faster bitcoin transactions.

Lightning Labs claims bitcoin is the native currency of the internet, and the company has created tools that integrate high-volume bitcoin micropayments through Lightning with popular AI software libraries like LangChain. Integrating Lightning into popular LLMs will not only make software deployment cheaper, but also increase the depth of possible use cases for AI, according to the company.

We’re in the business of enabling use cases that weren’t possible before, Elizabeth Stark, CEO of Lightning Labs, told CoinDesk.

An interesting use case presented by the company is the possibility of creating software that can charge for access to the application programming interface (API). APIs allow different software to communicate.

In a Lightning Labs article, the authors give an example of software or an AI agent that polls another agent for a fee. The inquiring agent would be designed to pay for API access to the queried agent, but additional payments would only be made after a satisfactory response was provided.

A user can sell a prompt by blocking access to an API capable of responding to requests, the post states. Potential buyers can then ask their own local agent to rate the response against a set of criteria. If the agent approves the response, further responses can be purchased.

Despite ChatGPT’s phenomenal success, Michael Levin, who leads product growth at Lightning Labs, predicted in a tweet that chatbots and their user interfaces (UIs) are just the beginning. He says the lion’s share of use cases will be in enterprise applications and software as a service (SaaS) yet to be discovered.

Chat interfaces are just the tip of the iceberg for LLM usage, Levin tweeted. Ninety percent of use cases are beyond that initial foray. The most useful products will not be chat interfaces, but SaaS/Enterprise/API products built on top of LLMs to uniquely solve user problems.
