Bitcoin BRC-20 tokens are now switching to Ethereum

Six months after the launch of a protocol allowing users to create NFT-like media assets on the Bitcoin blockchain, the Ordinals space is changing rapidly. Not only are new products popping up one after another, but ordinal-based BRC-20 tokens are now expanding to none other than Ethereum, the dominant NFT and token ecosystem.

Two of the largest BRC-20 tokens on the market, ORDI and OXBT, have partnered with the Emblema tool which allows users to store tokens on blockchains without the need for a bridge to publish BRC-curated collections. 20.

It should be seen as a day when the BRC-20 started exploring what their asset class is, said Jake Gallen, head of NFT strategy and product at Emblem.

BRC-20 tokens use the Ordinals protocol to generate effectively fungible tokens built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. Generally speaking, they have been used to create a wide variety of meme tokens so far, with the total market capitalization of all BRC-20s briefly approaching $1 billion in May before dropping sharply ever since.

Gallen told Decrypt that BRC-20 curated collections are important because now we can test which type of asset BRC-20s are most closely tied to. He looks forward to how the community perceives them and whether they want to trade them as fungible tokens or want some variety.

He teamed up with fellow self-proclaimed NFT archaeologist and fellow Adam McBride to share an in-depth video dive earlier this week on the launch of the collection. An official launch has been slated for next week, but the feature is already live and the resulting NFTs are trading on OpenSea and Blur marketplaces.

According to McBride, the innovation at play with the new partnership is bypassing traditional cross-bridges. He explained that before, users sent their BRC-20s to a Bitcoin wallet, which then minted new ERC-20s on Ethereum.

The Emblems solution, created in-house, consists of creating specialized vaults. Prior to Ordinals, Emblem Vaults were used to transfer digital artwork minted on other Bitcoin-related protocols (like Counterparty) to Ethereum, where they were newly minted as ERC-721 NFTs. The Rare Pepe collection is a striking example.

In this case, with ordinal-based BRC-20 tokens, users send their ORDI or OXBT to a vault which stores the private keys and holds the tokens. Then, using a single ERC-721 token, users will mint their Bitcoin-based NFT on Ethereum.

Essentially, the BRC-20 sits inside a Taproot wallet, which sits inside an NFT, Gallen said, explaining that the NFT (which is an ERC-721 token) is the one that made the whole trip.

I’m super excited to see how the Ethereum market will react to this, McBride said. This will bring a much higher level of ownership than what already exists, unlocking a bunch of use cases like farming, lending, and other things that are built on top of Ethereum smart contracts.

The creator of the BRC-20s and the ORDI in particular, pseudonymous chain data enthusiast Domo, did not respond to a request for comment. According to Gallen, however, Domo is really excited to be able to show off its creation to Ethereum, adding that getting those tokens on OpenSea and Blur is huge.

Gallen told Decrypt that the Emblem team has interacted more with ORDI builders than with holders, as they are in direct contact with the OXBT community led by the alias BitGod since he is more ETH native, “so interest in ETH-denominated trade is much higher.”

Nonetheless, Gallen said the Emblems team believes Bitcoin can match or surpass Ethereum in NFT trading volume, but with its own unique culture and style.
