Indonesia set to launch national Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange

The Indonesian government plans to launch a nationwide crypto exchange. The move is one of many attempts by sovereign governments to embrace the budding crypto industry.

Indonesia is looking to launch a national crypto exchange that will be solely responsible for trading crypto in the region. According to local news outlet Tempo, the Indonesian Commodity Futures Trade Monitoring Agency (CFTRA), known as Bappebti, intends to introduce this crypto exchange for trading Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) among others before the end of July.

Bappebti chief Didid Noordiatmoko clarified that some discussions related to the launch of the digital asset trading platform are already underway.

Precisely, the rules of the exchange were discussed and decided as well as the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures. CFTRA tested the integrated application the agency plans to use for the exchange trading process. Didid explained that system integration testing between traders, exchanges, clearinghouses and custodian was done on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

The agency plans to limit sales of digital assets to local transactions while keeping them in step with global market developments. All that remains is for Bappebti to sign the permit, which will give licensed traders one month to join the exchange.

The initiative began in 2021 when the owners of a state-backed telecommunications company in Indonesia announced a joint venture with leading digital asset service provider Binance to launch a joint cryptocurrency exchange. In 2022, the Indonesian government hinted at launching the exchange before the end of the year.
