A major cryptocurrency exchange joins as it moves to Miami.
Blockchain.com, whose digital platform allows users to buy, sell and trade Bitcoin and other forms of digital payment, said it would move its US headquarters from New York to Magic City. . In doing so, he said he hopes to create up to 300 jobs over the next 18 months, paying an average salary of $ 110,000.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez announced the move to City Hall Thursday morning alongside Blockchain.com CEO Peter Smith. Blockchain.com is among the top 15 cryptocurrency exchanges by number of weekly visitors, according to CoinMarketCap.com, which tracks the performance of the exchanges.
“Some have questioned the impact crypto can have on transforming our economy into a cutting edge economy,” Suarez said. “I would tell them this: How many companies like Blockchain.com are entering this market hiring hundreds of people in this salary range?… It’s happening because of this crypto movement.”
The announcement comes as Bitcoin2021, billed as the largest crypto conference ever, is set to kick off in Miami. This week has already seen other Miami-related announcements from the crypto world, including the creation of a $ 25 million seed investment fund and the launch of new city-specific crypto-coins.
Beyond crypto, the city continues to see a flood of companies, in the tech space and beyond, announcing a presence or an investment in Miami. A desire to escape winter conditions, less restrictive pandemic regulations, and an aggressive Suarez courting combined to raise Miami’s profile as a tech hub in ways that previously seemed out of reach.
A spokesperson for the city of Miami said that Blockchain is not receiving any financial incentives.
In a statement, Smith said, “Through a strong relationship with local government, we are honored to join Miami’s business community. The internet will be the world’s largest economy by 2030, and crypto is the system. Fund designed to support The City of Miami recognizes the potential of the industry and we look forward to contributing to Miami’s rich innovation ecosystem. ”
