Kraken CEO on US Users, Crypto Volatility

Kraken, the popular crypto exchange, has now brought its mobile trading platform to users in the United States. The company says that users will now be able to redeem more than 50 tokens on the platform, directly from their mobile phones. CEO Jesse Powell spoke with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang.

“You have to be able to have an iron stomach to tolerate the ride. But the payoffs are huge for those who can handle it.

Powell: We’re really excited to finally bring a retail product to the market, our business app has been around for a while, but it really completes the package for us in the US and allows people to buy direct. from their bank account and sell directly to their bank account. So it is a great convenience for people. This is something that people have been asking for for a long time. So we think the opportunity in the United States is great. We have had great success with this in the rest of the world. So we’re just planning for more success here.

Host: The story of the past two months, however, has been volatility. Jesse, you told us that Bitcoin will go to infinity by a million over the next decade or so that was my favorite quote from you, “a Lambo or around $ 200,000 by the end of the year”. Do you think it will still get there?

Powell: I stand by that, so look, you can buy, you can buy a futures delivery of a Lambo now at a discount to a cheap price of $ 37,000. A lot of people buy the dip. Personally, I google how to sell my kidneys at this point. It appears that. It’s illegal. Too bad for my body, my choice. But look, how I think people are getting ready to switch to ramen diets to buy Bitcoin at these levels. I think, you know, just everything that’s going on in Miami right now, the excitement around space is so hot. I think people are seeing this grow massively. So no worries about this little dive. We’ve seen it time and time again, crypto is a roller coaster. You need to be able to have an iron stomach to tolerate the ride. But the payoffs are huge for those who can handle it.

Host: Okay, but is it a good idea to have a rum and a diet? I mean, I thought people were only supposed to invest what they could really afford to lose.

Powell: Invest absolutely nothing more than what you can afford to lose, don’t gamble your rent on bitcoin, the price goes up and down by 50% in any given week. So you really have to be able to think about this investment and hold it for 5 to 10 years. You know, don’t think of it as a week-to-week swing trade. You know, people absolutely shouldn’t bet more than they can afford to lose. It remains a very risky investment. But obviously over time if you look at the chart, you know 10 years ago Bitcoin was trading at $ 1. Today, $ 36,000. Still from year to year, it’s over 200. So in the long run, it’s an absolutely fantastic investment. From my perspective, I absolutely wouldn’t put 100% of my wallet in Bitcoin or pay my rent in Bitcoin.

Host: And certainly not your food, your money. I don’t want people trying to survive on cup-o-noodles. OK, I want to ask you a question about Elon Musk because he’s had an incredible influence on the ups and downs here. And I wonder what you think of an individual with so much power.

Powell: Yeah, it’s really interesting to see the reactions to, you know, a person’s tweets and what that might have in the market, I mean, I think it just shows that the power of memes is. real and people are increasingly turning to non-traditional personality types for investment advice. You know, I think we realized that, like, we can’t trust the guys running the system now. And so who else is smart out there and seems visionary and seems to have the best interests of mankind at heart. And these guys have proven to be more trustworthy.
