In the wake of SpaceX’s announcement that the company was accepting dogecoin as a form of payment, a clothing store on colorful Brooklyn’s Flatbush Avenue also jumped into the deep, cold waters of the Doge.
Brick and mortar is another brick in the crypto adoption wall
The adoption of crypto has been widely and extensively discussed in the media and on social media, both as an investment vehicle and as a method of payment. Businesses large and small have declared their willingness to accept this or that cryptocurrency in exchange for their services or products; some companies have even overturned these decisions.
While bitcoin has garnered most of the attention in the adoption debate, not far away is dogecoin getting serious. In Cryptwerk’s Dogecoin Directory, there are “over 1,300 locations, stores and services accepting dogecoin”, although only a handful are physical stores. Bitcoin Cash has several locations around the world where it is also accepted, including many physical locations.
Yet even among the most enthusiastic cryptocurrency advocates, the experience of walking the streets, entering a store or cafe, and paying with crypto on a daily basis remains largely unrealized.
Enter Ragga Muffin on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, which recently started accepting dogecoin. The clothing and shoe store open since 1992 decided to accept trendy crypto “because young people love dogecoin,” says the store owner, who asked to be identified only by his first name, Dan.
A lot of our young customers are excited about cryptocurrencies in general and dogecoin in particular, so I wanted to be the first Flatbush store to accept Doge, to attract more customers.
Dan himself owns dogecoin and ethereum. Its investment philosophy is not compatible with the prevailing hodl gospel. He is a practical trader, looking for dips and tips to generate quick profits. As a testament to this, his dogecoin aspirations weren’t for $ 1, but rather $ 0.35.
Dan was reluctant to divulge the sales figures generated by his recent trading venture, but seemed very pleased with his decision to accept crypto into his store.
Lots of people walk in when they see the sign it creates a hype. Some ask if we also accept bitcoin. I tell them no, go buy Doge and come back!
Dan hasn’t provided a concrete answer as to why he doesn’t accept bitcoin either.
On the Dogefather himself, Dan had only good words:
Elon Musk has done the Doge community a great service. Before him, who knew Doge? I certainly didn’t. I hope he will continue to promote it. I’m waiting for him to say you can buy a Tesla with Doge, that will surely send Doge to the moon!
