UK Financial Watchdog Warns ICO Crypto Is A Cloned Company

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) claims that fraudsters are using the contact details of a company it authorizes in order to deceive victims, calling it a clone company.

In a warning issued on Wednesday, the financial watchdog said crooks operating under the ICO Crypto name are using the Business Reference Number (FRN) of an approved company to try and sound like a legitimate business. The other details he gives are false. The FRN it uses is owned by Swiss Re Capital Markets, a unit of Swiss Re, one of the largest reinsurers in the world.

“Be aware that crooks may give other false details or mix them up with correct registered company details,” FCA said. “They can change contact details over time to new email addresses, phone numbers, or physical addresses.”

All companies and individuals carrying out financial services activities in the country must be authorized or registered by the FCA. The Watchdog strongly advises users to deal with financial companies authorized only by the FCA and points to the Financial Services Registry to ensure they are.

In April, a similar case arose when a syndicate of crooks impersonated Gain Capital UK Limited, phoning and emailing investors under the guise of the Blockchain Recovery Association.
